Of course you do.

My guess is this video is from the last 90's. They're talking about these coming to market in the US. I don't recall these ever actually being sold in the US, but I could be wrong. I know I certainly have never seen one.

When I first saw this I had a feeling it would end up on Jalopnik.

This is easily one of the best-ever posts.

Let's just remind ourselves that they're still being made .

The fact that I find myself wanting that pickup is proof that I need help.

The only help you need is help importing one of these wonderful things to wherever you live. Trust me I'm a doctor*.

God, that Honda Passport was heinous.

I live in Southwest CT, the thought of parking it between some soccer mom's Land Rover and some hedgefund guy's Bentley at the local Whole Foods has a great deal of appeal

They were never sold here.

Guess they never brought them over. I've never even seen one of these.

If I had a local UAZ dealership I would walk in and put $ down a black one today. I'm in love!

Torch posted this retro Motorweek clip about the UAZ SUV but sadly the video has disappeared. Such a rad 4x4. It's too bad that we never got 'em in The States.

That motherfucker is immortal. I don't care what anyone says.
I've been watching that guy since I was a kid, he hasn't aged a day. Witchcraft. Or vampire. OR BOTH.

I've seen ONE! Exactly One and no more. I have no idea how the guy got it here, either.

Ok, why does that make it a shitbucket? No PS hoses to leak, pump to fill (or fail), and one less V-belt on the engine; manual brakes means no need for a vacuum hose or booster, and the brakes work every bit as well with the engine on or off.

Its not Soviet but lately I've had me a serious craving for a Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer 710M (and there is an awesome one for sale up the road from me in Denver ... sucks being poor)

Didn't this originally come out in 1437 BC?

Remember that bit in The Epic of Gilgamesh where Enkidu tries to drift a UAZ?
And the scene in Oedipus Rex where Oedipus and Jocasta are getting hot and heavy in the back seat of a UAZ?
I've been told that when Lao Tzu made that statement about a journey of a thousand miles beginning with a single step, he was actually talking about getting into a UAZ.

There are also certain Mongol paintings, that show what is obviously a UAZ. Scientists, archeologists, and treasure hunters are all trying to prove if the Mongols actually drove UAZ's, rather than riding their horses.
The UAZ 469 has also been seen as a transport vehicle for building materials for Hadrian's Wall, in the U.K.
In 1994, Russian scientists found a prototype UAZ, encased in a chamber of ice, that has been perfectly preserved. When holding a press release, the scientists claimed that the vehicle dated back to 465 AD.

Ever since I saw someone mention MotorWeek and the retro reviews on here I've been checking their YouTube page daily for new ones. Some of those videos only have a few hundred views and I'm super surprised by that.
I find it more interesting to watch the retro reviews instead of the videos with modern vehicles in them. All the weird and novel technology and features they used to include on 80s-90s cars was really neat. Plus there's that one guy that wears those black leather driving gloves in some of the scenes.
Classic!

I love how the Honda Passport was the example of 'modern, over-complicated luxury SUV's'...yet today, it's what the traditionalists want.

That voice. I had a VHS that came free with a subscription to some auto mag in the 90s. Watched that stupid tape hundreds of times.
To think auto-video journalism has evolved from that to Top Gear and ultimately to Chris Harris. Oddly the hairiest auto journalist in modern history stands the most upright. Clarkson is brandishing the spear I can only assume.

More accurately a first generation (93-97) Honda Passport.

I've been waiting that the Dirt Every Day or RoadKill would take one UAZ or Lada Riva and drop supercharged LS engine and liftkit in to one. That would be biblical.

That's fantastic! You can still buy the 469/Patriot and a lot of varieties of the pickup/van/truck/ambulance new. Some even without hazzle in the EU: UAZ sells military spec cars in the Czech Republic.

That last one has since been debunked, as it is impossible to date UAZs. It belonged a guy who parked his 2014 UAZ on the wrong side of the street on plow day.

Why is John Davis always shouting?
![]() 03/06/2015 at 11:46 |

I love motorweek. Consistently (unintentionally) hilarious week after week for what 25-30 years now?
Absolutely right (other comments) John Davis appears to barely have aged, always had a "middle aged big boned" look about him. And you have to love his ALWAYS SHOUTING presentation style which also hasn't seemed to change one bit in 30 years.
I also think i NEED an "Ooowwwww AAAAAhhhhzzzz" they look amazing

Now, I rarely hear people talk about UAZ trucks and the people I do talk to probably heard about them from me, so I just want to make sure...
"Ooh-aahhhhs"?
This isn't the real way you say it, is it? I say it "Yoo Eh Zee" currently because the alternative sounds funny. I've heard people say "Gaahz" for GAZ. How do the Russians pronounce UAZ, GAZ, ZAZ and the rest?
